I'm taking a course called Fair Housing this term, which reminded me of the story of Pruitt-Igoe. Here's the part of Koyaanisqatsi featuring the housing project:



More photographs of Pruitt-Igoe here. Pruitt-Igoe was demolished 5 years before I was born, but I remember very clearly the shells of buildings known as Darste-Webbe. It's hard to find a photo of the Darst-Webbe buildings online, but here are some of the buildings in the background of this picture.

Growing up in St. Louis in the 80s was really strange in that giant swaths of buildings seemed to have gone empty overnight. My neighborhood wasn't like that, but these giant swaths were only minutes away. A totally different world right next to mine.
