Boomers for McCain

Click on the chart for a bigger view.

Pew did a big poll. They have it Obama 47, McCain 44.

You may have heard a lot in the media about Obama's supposed problems with lower-income voters. But the Pew Poll doesn't show it. Obama beats McCain with voters making less than $50,000. Obama currently is slightly ahead of McCain among "high school or less" educated voters (Obama's margin was larger in April.)

You will continue to hear the media talk about Obama's supposed "low-income" or "working class" problem througout the summer and fall. The numbers will not back up this talk. Nevertheless, the talk will persist.

Okay, now check out the age breakdown. Obama enjoys a commanding lead among voters 18-50. He runs slightly behind McCain among voters 65+. He loses voters ages 50-64 by 7 points. Those are the baby boomers. They're a big segment of the voting public, which is why Obama has only an aggregate 3-point lead over McCain currently.

One can slice the electorate in all kinds of different ways, but to me this election's dynamics are informed by generational divides more than anything else. Of course, racial attitudes as they relate to generation are part of that mix, but I doubt that explains all of it. Some of it also may be that voters aged 50-64 make up more of that $50,000+ earnings bracket. At any rate, Boomers for McCain!
